Projects

  • Investigation of polycations developed for camouflage of erythrocyte antigens. Mechanobiological characterization and hemocompatibility of erythrocytes modified by polycations-membrane interaction. Dr Juana Valverde, Dr Bibiana Riquelme and Dr Patricia Foresto. ANPCYT: PICT Nº 03-14483 (2004 – 2007).
  • Mechanobiological and immunohematological characterization of the binding – receptor interaction on the erythrocyte membrane. Bionanotechnology. Molecular markers. Biocompatibility. Theoretical modelling. Director: Dr. Bibiana Riquelme. Code: BIO84 (2004 – 2006).
  • Study of the erythrocyte membrane surface properties and their participation in the cellular interaction mechanism. Director: Dr Patricia Foresto Code: BIO063
  • Convention signed by SEPCYT (Argentina) and FNRS (Belgium) in Immunohemorheology. For Argentina: P. Foresto and B. Riquelme. For Belgium: C. Grandfils and D. Sondag. (2006 – 2007).

Equipment

  • Erythrodeformeter
Instrument developed in our laboratory and used for determining dynamic and stationary viscoelastic parameters of red blood cells by laser diffractometry. The alterations produced in vivo by pathologies such as diabetes, arterial hypertension and anaemia, and produced in vitro by diverse treatments (glycosilation, lectins, etc.) are studied.
  • Erythroaggregometer
  • Instrument used for analysing association and dissociation kinetics of erythrocyte assembly (aggregated or agglutinated) by laser back scattering.

Results

Diffraction pattern of a red blood cell suspension

a) non-deformed b) deformed

Curves obtained by Erythrodeformeter in stationary regime

Curves obtained by Erythrodeformeter in dynamic regime

Agglutination and dissociation Curves

Study of erythrocyte adhesion mediated by antibodies

  • Flow Chamber

  • 3D Microscopy (confocal and cellscan)

  • Flow Cytometry
